Healing from trauma is possible

Trauma can involve a single experience, or repeated experiences, which overwhelm an individual’s ability to manage or assimilate the emotions or ideas related to that experience. Traumatic events can happen at any age and can cause long-lasting harm.

Traumatic events can occur throughout the lifespan, ranging from early life such as abuse in childhood, to later life experiences that are beyond your control such as a serious accident or a tragic loss.

 

Trauma may a single event, such as an assault, car wreck, or divorce, but it can also be a result of a long term pattern such as being bullied, experiencing childhood neglect, childhood sexual, physical, or emotional abuse.

Anyone can be traumatized, and everyone will be impacted by trauma in different ways.

It is the individual’s experience of the event that determines whether something is traumatic.

Symptoms of Trauma May Include

  • Re-experiencing the event (flashbacks/nightmares)
  • Avoiding reminders of the trauma
  • Chronic hyperarousal (startled response/feeling on edge)
  • Experiencing dissociation
  • Trouble connecting to your body/felt sensations
  • Difficulty building relationships and trusting others
  • Feeling as if you are permanently damaged, worthless, or completely different from others

Therapy Approaches

EMDR

A neurological and structured therapeutic approach focused on reprocessing trauma. Utilizing bilateral stimulation (eye movements or tapping), while focusing on specific memories emotions or sensations activates the brain’s problem solving process and re-engages the brain’s natural ability to heal, This form of therapy is more neurological based, meaning detailed accounts of traumatic events or experiences are not necessary for healing.

EFT

 Emotionally Focused Therapy is a form of talk therapy that focuses on the client’s underlying emotional needs. All humans are wired for attachment, meaning attachment is a basic need no different than the need for food, water and shelter. Emotional needs include nurturing, safety, belonging, and appreciation. Trauma often occurs within interpersonal dynamics- siblings, parents, romantic partners, or strangers- resulting in some level of betrayal of trust and safety within other individuals. If this occurs it can cause a significant rupture within the individual and their relationships resulting in one or more emotional needs no longer being met resulting in isolation and emotional distress. EFT can help individuals identify and get in touch with their emotional needs and empower them to seek connection.
